Although his childhood friends were very nice, I think having the woman as a friend really lets him see that he can be himself because she would be viewed as different when it comes to gender roles. She’s considered way more manly, whereas he’s more girly. His friends has been girly since childhood and knew him since childhood, so they would still view him as the same no matter what.
