I think I know why she did that : maybe being treated badly in high society because she was beautiful and having to marry someone out of business ( I suppose she had to marry for money or something in exchange for giving a son to the father) she doesn’t want the same for her step daughter and she want the heroine to find true love. She wants her to be loved not because of her beauty but because of her kindness smartness etc… I think I like the mother.
