tldr: The main characters are pretty bland and predictable. The story has a few unexpected and satisfying moments, but most of it is on par with the main characters. So overall: meh.
It’s a very tough read in the beginning. The female lead is so incredibly passive. She appears mostly apathetic or even emotionless. This kind of main character can be good, but they need something else to give their character depth. Here there is nothing really like that.
On top of it, her connection with the male lead feels really shallow. There is not a lot of build up. It just happens. First it’s mostly out of necessity, later on of course it develops in genuine affection, but the switch happens without much reasoning in my eyes. Personally I just did not feel the connection.
The story in itself isn’t bad. Whether the motivation behind the characters (other than the main character) or the general worldbuilding is realistic. The whole family dynamic of the female lead is explained pretty well. The politics behind everything make sense.
It’s ok and if there is nothing else to read, I guess, it’s worth a try. Also there were actually good and interesting moments (or would have dropped this long ago). Maybe this story is just not for me.
